Pattern draft rulers March 14, 2007
Like any patternmaker I use different rulers for drafting a pattern, most rulers have a different shape which I can use for a specific task.
The plastic curved and straight ones,

The straight metal rulers,

The dark brown wooden ruler at the top is a ruler used for pattern drafting men’s wear which belonged to my grandfather who was a tailor.

My most used and favourite is a set of wooden rulers made in Turkey I am hooked on these.I bought this set from a Turkish tailor who lives in The Netherlands.

The brand name of the wooden rulers is

Together with the above wooden ruler set I use the other 3 from beneath very regular.

I do not own Fairgate rulers but they seemed the best and are commonly used in the U.S.

Thanks for another useful insight, this time on measuring tools for patternmaking! Those wooden rulers seem great; I’ve never seen anything like that before. I own some plastic rulers, among them a special plastic Singer ruler for patternmaking. I also use a flexible ruler (mostly to check the armscye vs. sleeve cap measurement on commercial patterns).
And I’m hooked on just gazing at them. The wooden Seref tools from Turkey are so gorgeous! Thanks, Els!
What a collection. I love tools, especially ones like these that I have never seen before, and that have personal history for you.
I love that Seref set as well. Who says that tools can’t be beautiful to look at as well as use? You are very lucky to have family pieces as well. Just think what tales those rulers could tell if they coudl talk!
Thanks, Els for sharing your tools. I especially like that set of Turkish rules.
Myself, I use the Fairgate series because I bought them while in school. But, I also use a C-Thru product known as “shipmakers curves”. They are clear plastic with similar shapes to the Turkish ones you displayed.
Els - those tools are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
How can I order a set of the wooden curves?
I have Fairgate’s rulers and love love love the Fairgate Fashion Form. A very precise and well cut curve and much easier to use than that M.Müller&Sohn combi form, although the M.M&S L-square is essential in patternmaking. The Fashion Form also has a ‘tight’ french curve at one end for armholes and necklines.
Another piece I can’t do without is the right-angled triangle, 30cm, with the grip handle. The kids use it in school. It is the best for squaring off lines.
It is interesting to see what others use. Now please tell me where I can obtain a set of those Turkish wooden curves.
Where did you get the wooden rulers?
Susan Claire and Gemma I did sent you an email for the information about the seref rulers.

Thank you. Marilyn B.
The wooden rulers are beautiful. I have some that are similiar that were given to me many years ago from an uncle, who was a tailor. I have 30 years experience as an upholsterer and do custom and original interiors for customers who have spent $100,000.oo (+,+,+!) on a vehicle’s restoration or rodification. Most of the interiors I do are one-off creations and I use my uncles rulers almost continuously. A set of those ‘turkish delights’ would be a great addition to my tool box! Where-o-where can a set be obtained? Thank You. Al. D.
I love your collection. Couls you please send me the info on the seref rulers as well. I am obsessed with them I have shown your blog to everyone, just so they can look at them…we are all entranced. Thank you,
Laura

I was wondering if anyone happens to know how to get metric rulers for drafting slopers? metal etc wood. Long as I can use them I’m happy LOL . I have rulers in US measurements from school. Books I recently ordered for drafting menswear and one on children’s are in metric measurements. Kind of hard to use with US measuring tools.
Does anyone knows of books on menswear in US measurement that would be helpful as well since they are extremely hard to find. I have older ones from the 1970 that I came across but they are very vague and hard to understand when drafting slopers. THANKS!
Brenda,
Fairgate rulers ( metal) are also in metric , you can buy a kit which has 4 rulers and a booklet how to use them.

There are some patterndrafting books for mens wear but I do not know if they use US measurements ( inches)
Fundamentals of Men’s Fashion Design: A Guide to Tailored Clothes by Masaaki Kawashima
The Practical Guide To Patternmaking For Fashion Designers: Menswear by Lori A. Knowles
Els:
I already have an older print by Masaaki. The way that is written is a bit confusing. I have some sloper experience but need to take more classes so I’m sure that has something to do with it. I’ve never done pants before etc. The other book looks like something that may be up my ally. Thanks for the advice!
Would you please email info on how to purchase the Cerif rulers from the Turkish tailor? Thank you.
