Behind the Seams

I’m a bit behind on my reading. Yesterday, I finally had a chance to sit down and look through my March Elle. There is a *wonderful* article on the FIT archives on pages 280-282. The photos alone will make any Sewing Diva drool! Imagine being able to examine Charles James’ famed Four Leaf Clover Gown or Lauren Bacall’s Subway Suit. My favorite photo is that of the Charles James ballgowns on their custom-made dressforms hanging from the ceiling. Author Maggie Bullock describes them as “debutantes waiting to be presented”. The most delicious shot is from below: Technicolor froths of tulle look more like exotic flowers than petticoats. Honestly, I hope they keep smelling salts or those little ammonia ampules handy. The very thought of seeing, never mind touching (through white cotton gloves, of course), so much fashion history makes me feel a bit light-headed.

  1. Wow Gigi, that sounds like a great article! I don’t subscribe to Elle, but I will get this one. has pictures from the Met Costume Institute’s gala celebrating British Fashion that are worth a look too.

  2. I’ll have to check that out on If only FIT would publish a catalog of their archives! Imagine how HUGE it would be? Talk about eye candy.
