It Only Comes Around Once a Year

Christmas is the only time of year that this sweater can be worn. Not exactly a candidate for the Ugly Christmas Sweater contest, it  only comes out in December.

It was a sample, made in China,  for a collection I worked on a couple of years ago. It got rejected for its ‘unusual’ color combination. The factory just  decided to use what they had on hand, not the colors I had requested. That’s often the way with prototypes, they use what’s lying around, just to give an idea of the design, so that the next piece can be corrected. This poor sample never had a chance to go any further than the first piece.

It’s beautiful, its flawless embroidery and dazzling rhinestones are perfection. But everyone blinks when they see it, and it languished in the showroom until I rescued it and put it in the archive.

Here is the inspiration for the artwork of the embroidery – a Persian carpet my friend brought back from Turkey.

The beautiful but lonely sweater is the result.

Season’s best to all. It’s so great to share this sweater with those who might appreciate it for the little gem it is.

  2. Wow. I’d wear it, even with the color combo.

  3. Beautiful, although it is only the color scheme that keeps this as a once a year sweater. I love the inspiration and interpretation of it into another textile medium.

  4. I actually think the bright green is kind of an edgy interpretation. Not as “off” as you think. And I agree, the execution is beautiful. I noticed how precisely the two pieces align. If I did that work myself, I’d go through 30 sweater samples first. I think it’s beautiful. Wouldn’t it be gorgeous all done in a tone on tone in cream, ivory, soft taupe and the like?

  5. I think it’s a great sweater. Combined with the right pieces I think it can be really great.

Anyway, I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Christmas.

  7. Yum…pretty. Even with that color combo, or maybe especially because of it.

  9. Oh so beautiful… I love it: the wonderful design, which reminds me not so much of the Persian carpet it was derived from as of such Indian designs as the Taj Mahal ones; the perfect workmanship; and those beautiful colours.
    A thing of beauty indeed!

  10. What?? Leave this sweater in a closet?? Who says you can’t wear these colors except Christmas (narrow, narrow thinking)?? I think it would be great for any fall or winter wearing. I would wear it proudly and NOT just at Christmas–what an exceptionally beautiful garment!!
