What Works For U? The Divas Want to Know February 21, 2007
Diva Ann and I yak on the phone every day, and she called me last night. She needed emotional support because her DH (who is a prince, really he is) accidentally washed and ran through the dryer her dark green silk velvet Hot Patterns Patchouli Dress. Evidently it shrunk down several sizes and was covered with balls of nasty white dryer lint. Ann wears this dress all the time - trust me, I’ve seen it in person and it’s just perfection on her. It’s also a favorite when she has a singing gig, because it just works , you know? Now, her DH is wonderful guy, and I’m quite sure he’s already made good on this grievous mistake. But now poor An has a huge hole in her wardrobe!
And I can SO relate to her attachment to that dress - I have a outfit like that - my Hot Patterns Plain & Simple Shirtdress in a funky brown and blue 70’s print corduroy. This dress is my reliable I-don’t-have-time to-think-about-what-to-wear Monday morning outfit. I just add a pair of tall brown high heeled boots and brown tights or brown fishnets (depending on how cold it is) - and every time I wear it I feel GREAT. And I get lots of compliments. And it’s sooo easy - I just put on that dress and - voila! - fashion happens!
I feel the same way about Simplicity 4954, which is a Chanel style jacket that I put a lot of handwork into. It always works, every time.
So - what is your killer sewing project that is just so YOU that you when you wear it you’re Wonder Woman?

That as…..!
That is just such a typical male thing to do…
You guys look great in those outfits, I can certainly understand why you love them.
My wonderwoman outfit is this Burda skirt, made up in a nice blue/teal tweed fabric: http://www.burdamode.com/Aktuell,1270777-1000019-1252645-1252647-1252694,deDE.html
I haven’t reviewed it on PR yet, but I really should get a picture taken before I wear it to death…
I have to admit though that I usually wear dresses, but my favorites are store bought, I think this is purely coincidental though, right now I looooove knit dresses worn with boots….
My HP Razor Sharp pants (one pair in denim, one pair in grey str. trop. wool). I feel taller, walk straighter, and feel thinner when I am wearing them. Doesn’t matter with what. I feel Ann’s pain (On the bright side, at least her DH does laundry!) I was wearing my grey pair last night and dropped an olive oil covered lamb chop in my lap. 2 washes w/pre-treatment, thought I had it all out went through the dryer and no I did not get it all. Hopefully the drycleaner has better luck, of course now the stain is set in.
Can’t wait to see the incredible piece of jewelry that Ann gets as a make-up for that tragic mistake.
Oh no. This is why I don’t let my husband near the laundry. Ever.
Well, I’d like to say all the clothes I make, but that’s pretty useless, isn’t it? I’d have to say any one of my red dresses or my Butterick 4788 dress in the brown/teal leopard print.
They know better than to do the “mom wash” - it’s kept separately. And only I get to do the “black wash” - because most of it is mine.
Sadly I dont have a fabulous item right now. I am working on it though! I live in hope.
OH, ouch. Yes, I’ve had this happen as well. My favorite wool suit, drowned and shrunken into something that may have fashioned a very lucky barbie doll. Painful. And yes, I divorced him for this. (just kidding — well, about that particular reason, that is.)
As for the treasured piece, I have a bcbg max a. dress that’s sacred! Not too dressy, not too formal (but can easily transform to be either) fits precisely as it should, mended at least twenty times and critical to my survival. If anything were to happen to it, I’ll have NOTHING to wear to my own funeral!
What a tragedy!
My current kick-butt outfit is the HP Cosmopolitan Dress that I’m wearing in the photo with Phyllis. I pair it with tall black boots when I want to look fierce with major attitude.
Ooh, that hurts. It would have to be my new HP Slouchy Man pants. They are definitely filling a gap in the closet.
oh my - that sounds like DH is inflicted with NDS!
that could, no correct: has so happened to me several times!!!
as i have NDS (No Domestic Skills) syndrome i am always looking around for blogs where i might find some help in the domestic realm…
of course i don’t have a sewing project that makes me look fabulous. i have to buy my clothes….
