Serving Suggestion

I was just quietly reading the New Yorker magazine in bed last night (great reading material to put you to sleep!) when I saw this ad for a Burberry trench coat-

It made me think of the Simplicity Threads trench coat pattern 4084 that many of us rushed out to buy when it first came out a few months ago. Change the belt to a wide sash, and lengthen the cuff ‘belts’ to become ties, and voila! I think I would skip the pocket flaps in the princess seams on the Threads patterns.

How great would this be unlined in a silk paper taffeta for spring? Or if you want it to be functional as a raincoat, some kind of nylon waterproof taffeta? If I channel my mother, she would probably want to see it in a floral taffeta print. ( Not that she ever sewed, but she did have a distinct style that incorporated bright colors and big florals)

Mind you, there is a difference with the collar – the Burberry of the ad is not your traditional banded trench collar that the Threads pattern has reproduced. Let’s see if I get around to making the collar change…somehow I don’t think it will be too hard.

  1. I see Diva Ann at her Gorgeous Things blog is starting on her version of the Burberry *lace* trench using this Threads pattern as well. It must be in the air!

  2. Georgene, if you’re taking orders, I’m a 22 with an FBA. I am almost desperate enough for a red trench that I may have to just break down and make it. The New Yorker showed one on Rachel Weiss for their fashion issue and I have been salivating ever since.

  3. What? Do I feel the stirrings of desire for personal sewing??? Oh Georgene: Thanks!

  4. I have been planning to make DD a trench coat in a classic (boring) color – a pale mossy/gray poly suede. Talk about procrastination! But DD lives for red – anything red – and I think you have changed my mind. She would LOVE a red trench coat. Thanks, Georgene.

  5. Georgene, that would make a great statement coat in red silk taffeta for my climate – it’s gorgeous! I bought that pattern and some red 4-ply silk crepe for it but now you have me thinking….. Any Project Runway lovers surely noticed Laura’s shortie trench jacket – perhaps I can have both, one short, one long!

  6. Three or four divas making trench coats – and Karla too? I think this calls for a Threads spread! They will all be smashing I know.

  8. I’m certainly game. It may be the only way I get it done!

  9. This is a fabulous idea! If I ever finish all I’ve planned I’ll add it to my list!
