Graduation Dress - Part 1 May 8, 2006

Now that I’m finished with my son’s prom shirt it’s time to move on to my dress for graduation. I have exactly 8 days. I will be using this vintage 1974 Simplicity pattern, view 1. I thought I’d want long sleeves but it’s been soooo darn hot that I’m considering sleeveless even though it’s not my best look. I’ll be whipping up a quick muslin so I’ll decide then.

Here are the two fabrics I am considering. Both are wonderful rayon/lycra jerseys from www.textilestudiopatterns.com. They are both very pretty so I’m having a hard time making up my mind. Maybe I should look in the stash to see what else I have in there.

Gigi, I’m all for shopping one’s stash, but if you don’t come up with anything already on hand, I like the dots on the right for you. It would work marvelously with the pattern and with your style.

I am with Ann, the dotted fabric is what caught my eyes immediately for your vintage dress.

That’s funny, I wouldn’t have said the one on the left. Maybe because I almost bought that one so many times… :-) Either one will be gorgeous, though, I’m sure.

LOL, I made this dress…back when it originally was printed…I made it out of a light blue satiny material…loved it. Very falttering and very comfortable

I made this dress for my mother-in-law to wear to my wedding back in the 70’s. She had a lovely figure, and even though I used a soft knit, it still made her look pregnant with that gathering under the bustline.

That pattern would make such a lovely, simple wedding gown!

  9. SSAP Says:

The sleeveless style is to be put together for my daughter’s bridesmaids. I too pulled it out of my old stash. She really liked it but the comment above about looking pregnant has me worried (although one of the bridesmaid will be 5 mths along wedding day. I only have the size 12 and need 14, 16 and 20. Hopefully I can modify some similar patterns to the correct size and style.

OMG - that is the exact pattern my mom used in 1978 to make my dress for high school graducation! I still had it around here until a couple of years ago - I eventually made another dress by the same pattern for work. Very comfortable the best I can remember! THank you for rekindling the memory!
